Replace, refurbish, or sell the Rivian?

For now, this is almost entirely a warranty conversation. Nearly every R1T and R1S in the country is still inside Rivian's 8-year, 175,000-mile coverage, so a genuine pack defect should cost you nothing. If a truck or SUV ever does fall out of warranty with a failed pack, the math gets ugly fast: a $15,000-plus replacement against a depreciating vehicle rarely pencils out, and selling or trading is usually the more honest answer until the refurbished-pack market matures.

Worth fixing if you…

  • Have confirmed the vehicle is genuinely out of Rivian's warranty
  • Own a low-mile R1T or R1S still worth well above the pack price
  • Have access to Rivian service or one of the few capable independent EV shops

Lean toward selling if you…

  • Haven't checked warranty status yet (almost all are covered)
  • Are facing a $15,000-plus pack on a depreciated vehicle
  • The failure traces to collision or flood damage excluded from warranty

The Rivian R1T and R1S are recent enough that most owners will never see a real out-of-pocket battery bill, and the number that actually matters for nearly everyone is the warranty, not the retail price. Rivian backs the high-voltage pack in both vehicles for 8 years or 175,000 miles, whichever comes first, with a guarantee that it retains at least 70 percent of its original capacity over that period. Since meaningful delivery volume only started in 2022 and 2023, almost every truck and SUV on the road today sits comfortably inside that window.

If you do land outside coverage, the retail figures are steep, and Rivian hasn’t published an official rate card, so what exists comes from independent shop quotes and industry benchmarks rather than a confirmed price list. A Standard or Standard+ pack, the smallest of the lineup at roughly 98 to 106 kWh, prices at the low end of the range. A Large pack, around 135 kWh, costs more, and the Max pack, built for the longest range and the heaviest towing, costs the most of all. All-in, expect somewhere between $15,000 and $30,000 depending on which pack you’re replacing and whether Rivian service or an independent EV shop does the work. Labor alone can run $1,500 to $3,000, because the pack is structurally integrated into the vehicle and isn’t a simple bolt-in swap.

The one thing that would meaningfully change this picture, a mature refurbished-pack market, doesn’t exist yet. Compare that to a Nissan Leaf or Chevy Bolt, where years of used and remanufactured packs have created a real discount option. Rivians are too new for that. A few salvage packs have shown up for sale at a fraction of new pricing, but supply is thin and inconsistent, and buyers need to verify the actual state of health rather than trust a listing.

Run your pack size and path through the estimator, then weigh it against what your Rivian is worth today. For the vast majority of owners in 2026, the honest first step is simply confirming warranty status, because a genuine defect inside that 8-year window costs nothing. If a Rivian ever does land out of warranty with a failed pack, a $15,000-plus repair against a depreciating vehicle is a hard sell, and selling or trading usually makes more sense than paying full retail until the used-pack market has time to grow.

What moves the price

What changes the price of a battery replacement
What changes the priceEffect on cost
Which packA Standard or Standard+ pack (roughly 98 to 106 kWh) is the cheapest to replace. The Large pack (about 135 kWh) costs more, and the Max pack, built for the longest range and towing capacity, costs the most of all.
Warranty status firstRivian's high-voltage battery warranty runs 8 years or 175,000 miles, with a guarantee of at least 70 percent capacity retention over that period. Because the R1T and R1S only reached real production volume in 2022 and 2023, the overwhelming majority of trucks and SUVs on the road today are still well inside that window. Confirm coverage before assuming you'll pay anything.
Pack scarcityThese are recent vehicles, so a refurbished or used-pack market barely exists yet. A handful of salvage packs have shown up for sale, but supply is thin and inconsistent compared with an older platform like a Leaf or Bolt.
Structural integrationThe battery pack is part of the vehicle's structure, which makes the labor to remove and replace it significant regardless of who does the work. This is a large part of why even independent shop quotes stay in the five-figure range.
ExclusionsRivian's battery warranty typically excludes damage from collision, flood, abuse, and unauthorized modification. A pack replacement needed for one of those reasons is an out-of-pocket repair (or an insurance claim) regardless of the truck's age.
